Lost your job in Germany? Do these 7 things first
You got the letter. Or your boss told you on the phone. Now your head is full and every German word looks like a trap.
Breathe. Most of the damage after a job loss does not come from the job loss. It comes from missed deadlines. Some of them are only 3 days long. This page shows you what to do, in the right order.
Your first 7 days: the checklist
Tick each step when it is done. Your ticks stay on this phone only.
1Check the letter and keep it safe
TodayA dismissal in Germany must be on paper and signed by hand (§ 623 BGB). A WhatsApp, email or text is not valid. Write down the day you got the letter. This date starts your deadlines. Take a photo of the letter and the envelope.
2Register as a job seeker (arbeitsuchend melden)
Within 3 daysIf your job ends in less than 3 months, you must register within 3 days after you got the news. If it ends later, register at least 3 months before the last day. Late = 1 week without ALG I. You can do it online at arbeitsagentur.de or by phone: 0800 4 5555 00 (free). You must do this even if you want to fight the dismissal.
3Decide fast if you want to fight the dismissal
Within 3 weeksYou have 3 weeks from the day you got the letter to go to the labour court (Arbeitsgericht, § 4 KSchG). After that, the dismissal is almost always final. Free first help: your union, or the Rechtsantragstelle at the labour court. A lawyer for labour law can tell you if a settlement (Abfindung) is possible.
4Do not sign anything on the spot
AlwaysYour boss may offer a termination agreement (Aufhebungsvertrag). It can cost you 12 weeks without ALG I (Sperrzeit). The same happens if you quit yourself. Say: “I will take it home and check it.” You do not have to sign.
5Residence permit for work? Tell the Ausländerbehörde
Within 2 weeksIf your permit was given for this job, you must tell the Ausländerbehörde within 2 weeks that the job ends early (§ 82 Abs. 6 AufenthG). Do it in writing and keep a copy. Your employer has its own duty to report. A short time without work does not automatically end your permit. ALG I is an insurance payment, not welfare.
6Ask your employer for 4 things
Before your last dayA written reference (qualifiziertes Arbeitszeugnis). Your last payslips. Payment for holidays you cannot take anymore (Urlaubsabgeltung). Payment for open overtime. Ask by email so you have proof. The work certificate for the Agentur (Arbeitsbescheinigung) goes there electronically.
7First day without work: register as unemployed and apply for ALG I
Day 1 without workThis is a second registration (arbeitslos melden). Step 2 is not enough. Then send the ALG I application. Your health insurance continues and the Agentur pays it while you get ALG I.
How much money will I get? (ALG I)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How much? | About 60 % of your last net pay. With a child: about 67 %. |
| Who gets it? | You worked at least 12 months with insurance in the last 30 months. |
| How long? | 6 to 24 months. Under 50 years: max 12 months. |
| Not enough money? | The Jobcenter can add money (Grundsicherung, the old “Bürgergeld”, single adult 563 € in 2026) plus rent. |

5 mistakes that cost real money
| Mistake | What it costs |
|---|---|
| Registering as a job seeker too late | 1 week without ALG I |
| Quitting yourself or signing an Aufhebungsvertrag | Usually 12 weeks without ALG I, and fewer total days |
| Waiting more than 3 weeks to fight the dismissal | The dismissal becomes final, no settlement |
| Only registering once (forgetting “arbeitslos melden”) | No money from the first day |
| Not telling the Ausländerbehörde | Fine up to 1.000 € and trouble at your next permit |

Who writes this?
My name is Maninder. I live in Hamburg and worked in kitchens for 20 years. In 2026 I lost my job too, and I went through every step on this page myself. I am not a lawyer. I write down what the rules say and what really happens at the offices, in simple words.

Questions people ask
How many days do I have to register after I lose my job in Germany?
If you learn about the end of your job less than three months before it ends, you must register as a job seeker (arbeitsuchend) within three days. If you know earlier, register at least three months before the last day. If you are late, you can lose one week of ALG I.
Can my boss fire me by WhatsApp or email in Germany?
No. A dismissal in Germany must be on paper and signed by hand. A WhatsApp message, email or text message is not a valid dismissal. Still, do not ignore it. Write down the date and get help fast.
How much is ALG I (unemployment money) in Germany?
ALG I is about 60 % of your last net pay. With a child it is about 67 %. You need at least 12 months of insured work in the last 30 months. You get it for 6 to 24 months, depending on how long you worked and your age.
Do I lose my residence permit if I lose my job?
Not automatically. But if your permit is for work, you must tell the Ausländerbehörde within two weeks. ALG I is an insurance payment, so it is not treated like social welfare. Talk to the office early, in writing.
What is a Sperrzeit?
A Sperrzeit is a time when the Agentur für Arbeit does not pay you. It can happen if you quit yourself, sign a termination agreement, or register too late. Quitting or a termination agreement usually means 12 weeks without money.
Should I sign the Aufhebungsvertrag my employer gives me?
Not on the same day. A termination agreement (Aufhebungsvertrag) can cost you 12 weeks of ALG I. Take it home, ask the Agentur für Arbeit, a union or a lawyer first. You do not have to sign it.
What this page cannot do
It cannot check your contract or your collective agreement (Tarifvertrag). It cannot tell you if your dismissal is legal. It does not know your exact ALG I amount or what the Ausländerbehörde will decide. Rules can change. For your own case, ask the Agentur für Arbeit, a union, a lawyer or a free migration counselling office (MBE). This page is information, not legal advice.
